Sandra Ealy’s Portraits Quilts and A New Museum

I just took a look at Sandra Ealy’s blog and saw portraits quilts that knocked my socks off. My Uhuru sister stiches alot of fabulous quilts and these fabric faces are stunning. Jazz lovers will be dazzled by Sandra’s portraits of such artists as Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday. I gotta learn her technique. Check her out!

There’s a new museum in town. The Prince George’s African American Museum and Cultural Center is having it’s premier opening with a quilt display by members of the Uhuru Quilter’s guild. Two of my quilts are in the show. The Museum, in Prince George’s County’s developing arts district, shares space with artists’ studios. Come by on April 17th for quilting demonstrations and May 15th for open house and special presentations. 3901 Rhode Island Ave., Brentwood, MD.

The American Quilt 2009: Weaving the District’s Future

For ten days in September, 100 people gathered in small groups in various locations in the District of Columbia to make 8″ quilted squares to be assembled into an American Masterpiece. Sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, the DC Commission on the Arts and the Textile Museum this unusual quilt composed of 200 connecting blocks that can be rearranged was the brain child of Pat Autenrieth. Men and women, young and old, experienced quilters and novices were drawn to the project. Each block emerged from the imagination of it’s creator. Adinkra, political and religious symbols as well as the natural world served as inspiration. Blocks by youngsters explored future careers. Several expert quilters shepherded project participants through each phase from design to assembly to quilting. On Sunday, September the 29th, the quilt was unveiled at the Textile Museum.
