This series was born out of my hopes for equal rights in South Africa, for a country where black people could move about freely, without the necessity of government-issued pass. It honors the black South Africans who struggled for their freedom.

I conceived this quilt when Nelson Mandela visited Washington D.C., upon his release from prison.
